Glenrowan West Solar Farm Connected and Entering Final Phase of Construction

The Glenrowan West Solar Farm reached a key milestone in its construction program last month. The solar farm has achieved its first export of energy and successfully completed initial testing procedures as it moves into the final phase of construction. It is also recognised as the first solar farm to connect to the terminal substation in Glenrowan and generate clean, renewable energy to the grid - an excellent milestone project stakeholders are proud to have achieved.

Over the next two months, works will be completed in blocks of inverters and modules, before being sequentially combined to generate at a series of larger hold point tests under the supervision of AusNet Services and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

Scheduled to enter commercial operation at the end of March 2021, Glenrowan West Solar Farm is positioned as one of the largest renewable energy projects in Victoria and will generate up to 149-megawatt peak (MWp) DC for the National Electricity Market, providing the annual equivalent energy used by 41,000 local Australian households.

To successfully tackle the challenges of COVID-19, the project has rolled out an awareness campaign and action plan across the site, targeted to minimise the health impacts to the project workforce and subsequent impact on the surrounding community. Introducing these new work processes has allowed the construction site to remain safe, healthy and open since breaking ground in January 2020.

For the construction stage almost 300 jobs were created on site with a high proportion of local recruits. The team is continuing to follow all precautionary measures. Our goal remains to minimise disruption to the local community and deliver on the commitment to provide clean energy to the national grid for the next 30 years.

The solar farm is privately owned by WIRTGEN INVEST, with WIRSOL Energy and WiNRG delivering the Project Management services and Signal Energy Australia providing the lead in Engineering and Construction.

In the interest of the community under the current circumstances around COVID-19, the project will continue to provide progress updates via this website and Benalla Ensign whilst face-to-face community consultations are still restricted.
